Managing Log Files

The event log is a binary file updated by any Mobility component that logs event messages. By default, Mobility events are logged to the nmevent.nel file in the Windows folder.

To open a log file

1.	On the File menu, click Open. You can display a local log file, or one from a different computer.

2.	By default, Mobility events are logged to nmevent.nel in your Windows folder. This is a binary file updated by any Mobility component that logs event messages. You cannot view a text file in the Event Viewer.

To save a log file

1.

Open the log file you want to save. If the Event Viewer is set to auto refresh, or if you have applied filters to the Event Viewer display, the saved log file will contain only the events displayed in the Event Viewer window. To save a file of the entire event log, disable auto refresh before saving the file.

2.	On the File menu, click Save As.

3.	Navigate to the folder where you want to save the log file and enter the file name. The default extension is .txt.

When you save an event log, it is saved as a text file. You cannot view the text file in the Mobility Event Viewer, but someone who does not have access to the Event Viewer can open it with any text editor.

To print a log file

1.	Open the log file you want to print.

•	To print a selected part of the log file, select the events you want to print in the Event Viewer.

•	If the Event Viewer is set to auto refresh, or if you have applied filters to the Event Viewer display, the printed output will contain only the events displayed in the Event Viewer window. To print the entire event log, disable auto refresh before printing the file.

2.	On the File menu, click Print. In the Print dialog box, you can choose to print a selection of events rather than the entire file.

To copy text from a log file to the clipboard

1.	In the Event Viewer window, select the events you want to copy.

2.	On the Edit menu, click Copy. This copies the selected text to the Clipboard. Use the Paste command in another application to add this text to a document.

To clear the event log

•	On the File menu, click Clear Log Events.

This command clears the current event log. New events are recorded at the beginning of the log.
