Historic Sites

The Office of Historic Preservation preserves and protects Miami-Dade County’s cultural, historical, architectural and archaeological resources through historic designations, site management and monitoring, public education and by finding creative solutions and economic incentives for historic preservation efforts.

The County currently oversees 139 individually designated historic sites, 46 archaeological sites and zones, and eight historic districts. The County also serves as the historic preservation staff for the 24 municipalities that do not have their own preservation program or ordinance.

Federally-required environmental reviews are performed for housing grant applications involving structures over 50 years of age. The office surveys and identifies eligible sites and prepares the research for designation submittal and continues efforts to do public outreach and education on our community’s rich heritage.
